3 Common Reasons You May Need A Dental Crown

Cosmetic crowns are a good way to restore your smile and the structural integrity of your teeth. A porcelain crown is durable, attractive, and looks and feels completely natural. In many cases, getting one or more cosmetic crowns may be preferable to an alternative cosmetic treatment, such as veneers.

The best way to tell if a cosmetic crown is right for you is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Cristescu at Eastside Family Dentistry. In the meantime, here are a few reasons you may want to consider cosmetic crowns:

You Want To Replace An Old Gold Or Steel Crown

This is the most common reason patients are interested in cosmetic crowns. In the past, gold and steel were used to make crowns, due to the pliability and relatively low cost of the material. Many people still have gold or steel crowns, since they are just as effective as modern crowns (though not as aesthetically pleasing).

Not everyone likes the look of having a gold filling in their mouth, and steel crowns can appear grayish and discolor your smile. If you have a gold or steel crown, you may be able to have it replaced with a modern porcelain crown, which matches the color of your surrounding teeth. This helps improve your smile, your appearance, and your self-confidence.

Your Tooth Is Very Worn Or Misshapen

In some cases, your tooth may be too damaged or misshapen to treat it with a less-invasive option like veneers or dental bonding. If your tooth has been damaged by grinding, acid reflux, or tooth decay, it may be too worn down and misshapen to support a veneer.

If this is the case, a porcelain crown is usually the best option. The remaining tooth can be altered to provide support for the crown, which will then cover and protect the remaining tooth structure.

You’re Suffering From Tooth Decay

Veneers are usually only an option for those who have good overall oral health, so if you’re currently suffering from tooth decay, you won’t be able to get a cosmetic treatment with veneers. However, cosmetic veneers can treat the appearance of your teeth, as well as the underlying tooth decay, making them an ideal “2-in-1” treatment option for many patients.
