Are Veneers Permanent? What To Know Before Your Treatment

Considering cosmetic dentistry to improve your smile in Issaquah? You may be thinking about getting veneers. And while doing your research, you may have heard that veneer treatment is permanent, and that it can’t be reversed.

Is that true? What does it really mean? Are veneers bad for your teeth? You’ve got a lot of questions, and in this blog from Eastside Family Dentistry, we’ll give you the answers you need. Read on, and find out if veneers are permanent.

Veneer Treatment Is Permanent And Irreversible

The short answer is “yes.” Veneer treatment is not reversible, so it’s considered to be a permanent treatment. Once you get veneers, you will need to wear them for the rest of your life. You can’t go back to your old smile.

Why? It’s because during the veneer preparation process, some of your natural enamel must be removed. This layer of enamel is usually about 0.5mm in thickness. That’s not much material, especially compared to treatments like dental crowns, which require much more extensive trimming.

However, this is still a thick enough layer of enamel that your teeth will be permanently altered. If your veneers were to be removed, your teeth would be weaker, smaller, and more susceptible to damage like chips and tooth decay.

Don’t let this scare you, though. Veneers are not bad for your teeth! The porcelain material used to cover up your trimmed teeth is extraordinarily strong and durable. It will protect the underlying enamel, ensuring your oral health is not affected by your treatment.

Your Veneers Won’t Last Forever, But They Are Very Durable

One confusing thing about veneers is that they’re considered to be a “permanent” treatment because the enamel process is not reversible, but the veneers themselves will eventually wear out. They are not “permanent” in the sense that they will last forever.

That’s because, just like your natural teeth, your veneers will go through a lot of wear and tear as you eat, chew, and bite. Veneers are built from strong porcelain and are bonded to your teeth using powerful dental cement , but they can still crack, chip, or become dislodged over time.

When this happens, you will need to have the affected veneer replaced. The good news is that veneers usually last between 10-20 years for most patients. And with great oral hygiene and a few lifestyle changes, they can often last even longer. This means you won’t need to have them replaced very often.

This is one of the many reasons why you should see a dentist like Dr. Cristescu for teeth cleanings and oral exams every six months. Dr. Cristescu will assess your oral health, and she will also check on your veneers to make sure they’re in good shape. If she notices any veneers that may be failing, she can recommend that they be repaired or replaced, depending on the situation. This keeps your smile looking perfect and gorgeous for the years and decades to come.
