The team at Eastside Family Dentistry wants to keep patients informed about treatment procedures, so here’s a few things that will help you understand what yto expect if you decide to have dental implant surgery:

Preparing For The Implant – Extractions, Sinus Lifts, Bone Grafts

If the tooth you want to replace has not fallen out, it must be extracted before implant surgery. The site of the extraction will need to heal for 3-6 months before you can have an implant placed.

In some cases, sinus lifts and bone grafts may be required before the implant, if your bone tissue is weak. If this is the case, it can take anywhere from 4-9 months to recover enough to undergo implant surgery.

Your Consultation And Implant Planning

At your consultation, Dr. Cristescu will ensure that you are healthy enough for a dental implant. This involves checking your gum tissue and jawbone to ensure that there is enough to support an implant. If you are a good candidate for dental implants, digital x-rays and advanced scanning software will be used to take images of your mouth and develop a customized treatment plan.

Your First Appointment – Placing The Implant

During your first appointment, Dr. Cristescu will clean your mouth and numb the area that will receive the implant. Then, a small incision is made, based on the plan developed during your initial consultation. The dental implant is then placed into the gum and bone tissue, and the incision is sutured shut. This entire process usually takes less than an hour.

Your implant may be protected by a temporary crown or a healing abutment after your initial surgery. The implant will heal completely within 3-6 months, and at this point the restoration will be permanently adhered to it.

Your Second Appointment – Placing The Implant Restoration

While your implant heals, Dr. Cristescu will work with a third-party dental lab to create a dental crown that matches your surrounding teeth perfectly. When you have recovered from your initial surgery, you’ll come back into our office to have your implant restoration placed permanently.

This process is quite simple. The the dental crown is checked for the proper fit and finish, and it is bonded permanently to the implant with dental cement, completing the procedure and giving you a beautiful replacement tooth.
